Purely Dicta

Phillipa Noakes and Lily Fordyce, Purely Dicta Editors

Are you anxious for some excellent time-wasting material? Craving something to distract you from the mundane existence that can be your law degree? Eager to participate in a fantastic institution of the Melbourne Law School? Then look no further. This year, Purely Dicta – the Law School Student Magazine – will be bigger and better than ever.

Welcome to Law in 2008, and welcome to a new and exciting year for Purely Dicta.
You can expect from us – the 2008 editors – consistent publications, with the timely release of editions (just when you need a pleasurable distraction – exam time) and deadlines met for the distribution and production of Purely Dicta.

Be prepared to be entertained with witty articles, blog extracts, conversation snippets you’ve heard (or wish you had) and quotable quotes. Be challenged with topical debates, vox pops and investigative articles. Get informed through interviews with law graduates ranging from those straight H1 students to the P-gets-the-degree-student – and see where they are now (and how you can get there too)!

Get ready to get your hands dirty with the (Ambulance) Chaser’s War on Everything segment, no Bin Laden costume required, just stealth, nerves of steel and some ingenuity.

As well as providing consistent segments and features throughout Purely Dicta publications we will be on the prowl at all Law School events ready to capture that dress, that dance move and that embarrassing moment.

In 2008 we are looking to take Purely Dicta into the realm of an independent magazine – with awesome graphics, material that you want to read and an independent forum for you to participate in. Purely Dicta isn’t as much about the Law School as it is about its law students – i.e. YOU! It’s a chance for you to voice your concerns, contribute humourous articles and fantastic photos. Getting involved in 2008 doesn’t have to mean joining societies, committees or journals: let the Law School and your fellow students know what you’re thinking. Write an article, send in a quote, contribute a photo – be a part of the friendly side of Melbourne Law.

We know there are some of you out there who:

  • Crave self-expression and escape
  • Would like to rediscover that creative streak you hazily remember from your pre-Law School life
  • Feel a sudden panicky need to contribute to Uni, Get Involved etc, but feel wary of committing to anything too demanding of your time

Or even just...

  • Need a new form of procrastination

Well, we are here to help.

Who are we?

Purely Dicta is a biannual magazine designed, produced and published by students within the Law School. The process is overseen by two Editors, with the support of the Law Students' Society (of which we are also a part).

What is our plan for PD in 2008?

Our aim for Purely Dicta this year is to give you something different, creative, and above all, representative of the diverse facets of the Law School community.

Help us depart from the cliché that Law School kids are a bunch of socially-barren, exclusive, bookish lepers without a creative bone in their bodies.

In any case, PD is about self-expression. We want your contribution, whatever form you select (opinion piece, investigative piece, creative writing, poetry, prose, photography, drawing etc).

Submission criteria

While submissions do not need to relate explicitly to an issue in the law, the measure is whether the article is of relevance or interest to law students. Our aim is to represent the Law School community, and we are doing that by soliciting articles from the people who make up that group. We want to keep the content as flexible and creative as possible, whilst ensuring that it is something that appeals to our readers (i.e. law students).

Some of you may prefer guidance in terms of topics. The following document may provide you with some inspiration for your submission:
