Never again (in the foreseeable future) will we have Law Faculty Ball as big as they traditionally are. With the new student intake at the Law School being a mere 80 students (and not likely to increase by much in the near future), the days of the huge 1000+ person Law Ball is probably a thing of the past.
The good news? At least the last one will be known as the best one ever.
The Law Student's Society wanted something accessible to everyone i.e cheap, but fun and classy, yet different.
And I thought "Yeah sure, why not just throw in a free XBOX 360 for every attendee while we're at it?" but we managed to execute one party that was completely off the hook from start to finish.
One thing I understand about Law Ball is that people go there to dress up and hang out with friends. And dance. They don't really care about what happens on stage. Nor do they really care about what's being served, as long as it’s decent.
Some features of this years' ball that I thought really made it as special as it was:
A well decorated, classy venue. And someplace where Law Ball has never been before, The Atlantic Group at Docklands.
Pleasantly surprising good food.
Free Red Bull. To fuel the night.
Professional Photographers on hand at request.
Ridiculously awesome DJs, who knew exactly what we were looking for.
The mix of Asian and White people presents a unique musical challenge. Too much RnB will irritate the white people. Too much house will irritate the Asian people. So the question is, what kind of music can you play that will make or break the night? We went with the idea that retro and pop non stop hits will appeal to everyone, and cut through cultural boundaries like a hot knife through human flesh. And it did. Everyone was on the floor shaking it up. And thank goodness we had DJs who not only shared our opinion of what was appropriate, but executed and expanded on the idea flawlessly. So thank you DJ Jeremy and DJ Daniel from Pro Mobile DJs. Its hard to please everybody, but I'm glad we did it anyway.
The afterparty was within walking distance of the Ball, along the dock at the Watermark Bar. One again, classy venue and excellent music, continuing the theme of the night.
Thanks to everyone who came and made the night truly amazing.
And to the haters who doubted the event beforehand and abused us on Facebook… kiss my butt. You either missed out on the best Law ball ever, or you came down and had fun, despite your best efforts not to. I have all your names from the Facebook event wall.
