From the Careers VPs

Fiona Borrelli and Shirmaine Koh

After the long hard road to completing your law degree, the idea of getting a job in the real world can be daunting. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you! As your 2008 Careers VPs, we’re committed to providing you with all the information you need about legal and alternative career paths. Through a variety of publications, cocktail parties, and seminars, we hope to equip you with all the tools necessary to guide you through the application process.

Seasonal Clerkship Guide
The seasonal clerkship guide is a great resource with all the information you need about applying for your seasonal clerkships. With information about writing a resumé and cover letter, interviewing techniques, and what to expect from your experience, the guide gives perspective from both firms, and students. It will also contain an extensive directory, providing applications dates, and details for a multitude of firms and organisations.

Practical Skills Seminar Series

Running as a follow up to the release of the seasonal clerkship guide, the practical skills seminars will feature presentations by law firm representatives about the skills needed to give you the best chance of a successful application. Firm representatives will also give you a personal insight into each firm’s focus, and culture, to find the firm that fits you, and provide an opportunity to ask questions you might have.

Meet the Profession Cocktail Party
The premiere night for the careers portfolio, the MTP Cocktail Party is one of the most popular events run in the law school. It provides one of the last opportunities to ask questions, and talk to firm HRs, partners, and articled clerks before seasonal clerkship applications finally close. Come and chat while you enjoy drinks and nibblies in a friendly atmosphere, with all the major law firms present, and at your disposal

Careers Guidebook
The bookend to the year, the careers guidebook provides a fountain of knowledge for anyone looking to apply for articled clerkships the following year, as well as information about alternative career paths you may wish to follow once you’re equipped with your law degree. Packed with application advice and information about local and international firms and  organisations, it’s an invaluable resource for all law students.

As well as all this, throughout the year, we’ll keep you posted on upcoming legal careers fairs, and events, as well as seminars running in and around the law school about alternative career opportunities. Make sure you check the LSS Careers website at www.mulss.com/careers for updates.

Please feel free to contact us with questions throughout the year,  and we welcome any comments or suggestions youhave about  improving any of the services and publications offered by the Careers portfolio. We look forward to meeting you!
