In July this year, ALSA will be holding its annual conference in Melbourne. As part of this event, there will be a series of national competitions running. We are looking for students to represent Melbourne Law School in the following competitions:

4th World Human Rights Moot Court Competition

The 4th World Human Rights Moot Court Competition will be held at the University of Pretoria, South Africa from 8-10 December 2012.

Every university in the world is invited to present a team of two students. The universities first have to submit memorials on the basis the hypothetical case. The first selection of Universities will be on the basis of written memorials.

The memorials will be evaluated by a team of eminent human rights experts, and the best 15 teams from the 5 UN regions will be selected to attend the final rounds in Pretoria in December.

MULSS Mooting Competition - Round 1

Round 1 of the LSS Mooting Competition, sponsored by King & Wood Mallesons, has started this week (Monday 19 March) and will be running over two weeks! Would all competitors please check their emails for details of the first round and when their team is mooting. If everyone involved in the competition could also please join our facebook group where we will be posting the fixtures, guidelines and other important details. We can also answer all your questions there or by email at lss-mooting@unimelb.edu.au.

LSS Witness Examination Sign-Ups

It's time to sign up for the most exciting law competition of the year; Witness Examination! Witness is fun, doesn't require too much preparation time, and is a great way to gain some experience.

Inaugural Hon. Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot

This competition will be held at Victoria Law School from 28-30 September 2011. This will be an annual competition of teams representing law schools from around Australia and is designed to be an educational program with many facets comprising the competition.

 The moot is intended to simulate a dispute resolution proceeding for parties in a contractual law dispute. Students are encouraged to develop and improve their practical legal skills as well as their comprehension and retention of the substantive contract law throughout the mooting period.

Mooting League

The Mooting League is the perfect opportunity to get mooting experience in a less competitive environment.

The competition starts in week 3 with teams of 2 or 3 and will be run as a round robin.  Anyone can be involved but first years are especially encouraged to enter. There is no requirement for written submissions. The sign up sheet is on the LSS activities notice board on level 2. There is a maximum of 32 teams so sign up quickly before you miss out!!

VIIIth K.K. Luthra Memorial Moot Court

The VIIIth K.K. Luthra Memorial Moot Court, 2012 will be held in India on the 3rd weekend of January, 2012.

The Inaugural function will be held on 20th January, 2012 at the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, Delhi.  The preliminary and quarter-final rounds will be held on 21st January, 2012 at the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, Delhi. The semi-final and final rounds will be held on 22nd January, 2012 followed by the Prize Distribution at The India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

LexisNexis & Sir Harry Gibbs Moot

This year the Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot competition will be held from Thursday 29 September - Sunday 2 October. The Grand Final will be held in the High Court of Australia, with the Hon Chief Justice French sitting on the Bench. In addition to the moot competition itself, there will also be social events run over the course of the four days.
Registration
Registration will open on Wednesday 20 July at 9am, and will close at 5pm on Friday 7 August. Registration will be $900 per team. This registration cost includes accommodation, as well as most meals and entry to all social events.
Teams
Teams can be made up of either two or three members. All Australian and New Zealand universities can register up to two teams each.

3rd Government Law College International Law Summit

Organized by the Students for the Promotion of International Law (SPIL), Government Law College, Mumbai in association with the Indian Merchants’ Chambers. The Summit is scheduled to take place from the 3 rd- 5th February, 2012. The Theme for the Summit, 2012, is International Trade Law and Economic Policy.

Government Law College enjoys the distinction of being the oldest law school in Asia and has, since its inception in 1855, essayed a seminal role in the evolution of the legal and judicial landscape of India. Generations of legal luminaries, nurtured at Government Law College, have made remarkable contributions to the evolution of Indian jurisprudence.

VIIIth K.K. Luthra Memorial Moot Court, 2012

The Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi will be hosting the VIIIth K.K. Luthra Memorial Moot Court between 20th January, 2012 and 22nd January, 2012. This Moot Court is the only one to be held exclusivley on Criminal Law in India. It was last held between the 14th and 16th of January 2011, with 46 teams from top Indian and overseas universities competing.

The inaugural function will be held on the 20th of January 2012 at the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, Delhi and registration of teams will take place immediately prior to that on the same day. The preliminary and quarter-final rounds will be held on the 21st of January at the Campus Law Centre, followed by semi-final and final rounds on the 22nd of January at the same place.

The Moot Court problem, along will the rules and schedule, is currently up on the website www.kkluthramoot.org. 

Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting Essay Competition

The CLMM essay competition is open to Australian undergraduate students enrolled in a law degree or related fields of study at universities across Australia, and law graduates in the first five years post admission. It includes questions that are related to the Commonwealth, law, politics, history and social justice.

The winner will be flown to Sydney to attend the Pacific Young Lawyers Forum (a side event to the CLMM) and the Opening Ceremony of the CLMM and have the opportunity to meet the First Law Officers of the Commonwealth's 54 member countries. The winning entry will be published on the CLMM 2011 website and in other forums. Further information is available at http://www.clmm2011.org. The competition closes on Monday 6 June at 5pm AEST. Isaacs LexisNexis Moot Competition

The Isaacs Law Society at the University of Canberra is proud to announce that the LexisNexis Constitutional Law Moot for 2010 is running again this year.

We have secured The Honourable Chief Justice French AC to judge the grand final in the High Court of Australia. The competition will run from Thursday 30th September until Sunday 3rd October. The LSS will pay for registration (including accommodation, most food and social events), however transport and miscellaneous costs will be at the expense of the competitors.

**IHL Mooting Grand Final** (Thursday 12 August)

Exciting news everyone!! The IHL Mooting Competition is fast approaching its conclusion with the Grand Final to be held on Thursday 12 August.

 

Details:

Date: Thursday 12 August

Venue: The Federal Court (William Street - opposite Flagstaff Station)

Time: 7:30 - 8:30pm 

Afterwards: Join us at The Metropolitan Hotel (across the road from the Federal Court) for drinks!

Semester 2 Mooting League Registration NOW OPEN!

Registration for Semester 2's Mooting League competition is now open.  There are limited 30 team spots available (there will also be a waiting list just in case).

Please note that no individual team member is to have progressed past round 3 in the general Mooting and IHL Mooting Competitions.

The league will be held during lunch times from Monday to Thursday (1-2pm).  Round 1 will start in week 4 (Monday 16th).

The sign up clipboard is available at the front of the LSS Office door.

Melbourne Law School Represents at the 2010 ALSA Conference

Over the holidays, 10 Melbourne Law School students competed in the Australian Law Students' Association national competitions, held in Adelaide. Julian Law (2nd yr JD) won the Witness Examination competition, a fabulous achievement. Georgia Boyce and Eamonn Kelly (1st year JDs) made it to the semi finals for the International Humanitarian Law Moot, and Georgia was awarded the Best Speaker award for the IHL Moot. Overall, all 10 competitors did very well, so congratulations to all.

Submissions of essays for the 2010 Paper & Oral Presentation competition are due Friday 16th of July by 5pm.

Please make sure the essay submitted follows the requirements set out in the 2010 Competitions Guidebook (available online or outside the LSS Office).
