Junior Mooting

Junior Mooting
2008 Coordinator – Benjamin Tan

Whether your style is more Legally Blonde or Boston Legal, Junior Mooting gives you a feel for the real thing, a chance to practically apply your knowledge and a bunch of fun (while looking damn good doing it. There’s nothing more attractive than a barrister in full flight). It will also allow you to improve your advocacy skills, knowledge for your exams and resume.

Mooting places you in a mock court case scenario, and pits teams of two (Senior and Junior Counsel) against each other in a battle of legal reasoning and wit. You’ll work together with your partner to present your case to the presiding judge.

Junior Mooting is the only chance you’ll get to have a level playing field- only first year students can enter. So don’t worry- there’s no possibility of coming head-to-head with a team of fifth years studying for their bar exams: all your competitors will be in the same boat as you.

Once you’ve got the problem (a mere 24 hours before you step on stage), you should try to research and then divide up the major issues between you and your partner. You’ll then have ten minutes (maximum) to present your argument to the judge. Begin by outlining your main submissions, and then make sure your arguments flow logically. Be ready to clarify anything the judge asks you to!

Mooting runs at lunchtime in the law school and, frankly, we couldn’t have made it easier for you. Think of any reasons why not to do mooting?

Me neither.

Dress code: casual in early rounds and formal from quarter-final onwards.
