From the Education Vice Presidents
Hadi Mazloum and Arani Satgunaseelan
As your Education VPs for 2008 we again welcome you to the Melbourne Uni Law School. Simply put, Law School can be really tough. It is renowned for putting immense pressure on students via lengthy readings and a massive workload. But fear not, we are here to help you!
We hope to enhance your experience by providing you with services that ease the workload thus making you see the interesting, fulfilling and inspiring aspects of this degree.
This Guidebook
This Guidebook is your dummy’s guide to Law School and aims to introduce you to the services offered by the LSS as well as the administrative and academic aspects of your degree.
Study Groups
Learning with others is easier and more fun than learning alone. But it is often difficult to form study groups, especially given you are in your first year and don’t yet now know many people. We will therefore be facilitating the formation of study groups. Sign up sheets can be filled out by interested students and we will match you up with your fellow students by subject. It’s that easy!
Student Tutorial Service (STS)
The STS aims to act as a supplement to your regular streams. These tutorials are run by students who have excelled in the subject, enjoyed it and demonstrated good communication and teaching skills. They will provide the opportunity to clarify difficult points, summarise class content and get your questions answered. The tutor’s notes will also be posted on our website just in case you miss out on a tute. We are also hoping to have these tutorials taped this year so that you can listen to the tutorials by downloading the link from our website!
To the JDs: These tutorials are based on the LLB degree. You are bound to gain something by attending these tutes given that despite the structural change in your degree, the content is extremely similar. Tutors will still be able to answer your questions and most of what they will cover will form part of your curriculum in any case.
Sir Anthony Mason Lecture and Cocktail Party
The Sir Anthony Mason Lecture was established in 1995 and is run annually where a highly recognised member of the legal profession will deliver an inspirational and insightful speech. Last year, we received interest from Justice Michael Kirby of the High Court. Therefore, this year we are excited at the prospect of having Justice Kirby visit our Law School and deliver a speech to admiring students (after all he is the Rock Star Judge!). The Lecture will be followed by a cocktail party with free food and drink for all to enjoy.
Committee Representation and Policy
We sit on a number of faculty committees as student representative and are keen to hear what you have to say so that we can voice your opinions and concerns.
The committees are:
The Executive and Budgets Committee: An advisory committee for the funding and financial decisions of the Faculty
Undergraduate Studies Committee: A committee that discusses issues relating to the LLB
