Students With Disabilities


The university offers many services that may be of assistance to law students with disabilities. Below is a summary of the services offered.

Summary of Services Offered


The Legal Resource Centre:

  • Large-print photocopying is available.
  • The LRC has a special needs room, which is located on the fourth floor of the Law School, and includes a computer with the JAWS speech program and a large flat-screen monitor (which displays documents in large print), a scanner, and ergonomic chairs and tables.
  • The library staff are more than willing to assist students in obtaining articles and books who are physically unable to do so.

Building Services:

  • All lecture theatres of the Law School have hearing loop facilities and wheelchair access
  • Lifts include information in Braille and speaking facilities
  • The floor layout includes bumps to aid people with visual impairments
  • Toilets for people with disabilities are available on every level of the building

Undergraduate Studies Office:

  • Students with disabilities can apply for special consideration where their work has been adversely affected by a disability or by circumstances beyond their control
  • Special consideration can result in things such as grading consideration, an opportunity to sit a supplementary or special exam, or the opportunity to complete an alternative assessment

Disability Liaison Unit:

  • The DLU can make alternative exam arrangements for students with disabilities, for example, providing exams in large print and extending the time limit for exams (students must register with the DLU)
  • The Unit provides tape recorders for loan
  • It can arrange for not-takers to sit with students in class and take notes of the lecture or seminar presentation
  • It can also provide a person to undertake reading and library support
  • The Unit is located in the Richard Berry House
  • Drop-in times for short queries are Tuesdays (2.00 pm to 4.00 pm) and Thursdays (10.00 am to midday)
  • Appointments for long interviews can be made by phoning 8344 7068

Law School Disability Liaison Officers:

  • The role of the officers is (1) to address disability policy issues and to facilitate the progress of students with disabilities through the law programs, (2) to liaise with and support students in academic and other related matters, and (3) to liaise between the DLU and the Law Faculty
  • Students with disabilities can notify that Liaison Officers by email of the fact that they are a student with a disability (the email should include the student’s name, disability, and information about special needs)
