Mature Age Representative
Mature Age Students Representative
Welcome to the Mature Age Students Representative portfolio homepage of the Melbourne University Law Students’ Society!
This portfolio looks after the special interests of mature age students, students who are studying the LLB as a graduate entry student as well as JD students.
Don’t be put off by the term “Mature Age Students”! It does not necessarily imply a frail elderly person (however they are most welcome too). The term is more of a tradition rather then representing a particular age group. At different points in life you may find yourself at uni having done another degree, raised kids or worked in a profession. You would bring with you the wealth of your experience as well as high dedication and thorough understanding of what you are doing and why. At the same time studying in these new circumstances may be a rather stressful experience due to lack of time and high pressure from study and other commitments. This may lead to isolation and lack of connection with fellow students, which may come at a cost down the track when you enter the profession. As many of you would know very often success is determined not only by what you know but also by who you know.
Mature Age Students portfolio provides the opportunity to become involved in social activities together and create a community of mature age students. It can also be perceived as an outlet to give feedback and as a body that can lobby for special needs of our cohort, depending on the experiences and desires of the students.
The Mature Age & Graduate Entry Students representative for 2008 is Kostya Rotarou. Kostya can be contacted at any time about any issue on lss-matureage@unimelb.edu.au.

Liaison Officer John Tobin
The Mature Age Students also have an academic staff member as a liaison officer. In 2008 this person is Mr John Tobin. For a number of years already John has looked out for us as a special group, he is aware of our problems and special interests and he is someone you can contact in case you want to talk to a staff member rather than a student (you don’t have to make a choice here, feel free to contact both of us).
John Tobin can be contacted at: j.tobin@unimelb.edu.au
Current Events and Programs:
Buddy-Mentor-System
The Mature Age Students Portfolio runs a buddy-mentor-system, which entails that earlier year mature age students can be paired up with more experienced colleagues. This program gives an opportunity to dip into the law school grape vine more easily and to have a personal mentor who can be contacted to explain the inner workings of the law school. This way we do not have to reinvent the wheel all the time. Tucked under the wing of someone who went through the first sometimes confusing semesters of the law course, it is easier to figure how things are done around here: where it is possible to take short cuts, what subjects is most feared, which teachers are talking real fast and where the best coffee place is...
If you are interested in being a mentor or a buddy, please let me know and send an e-mail to lss-matureage@unimelb.edu.au
Social Events
We encourage all mature age students to participate in the widest range of practical and fun activities organised by LSS. However, this portfolio also runs events specifically catered for mature age cohort where you could mingle with the students who are in the same boat with you as well as meet practicing lawyers and articled clerks. Join our emailing list, check weekly LSS updates and keep an eye out for our advertisements throughout the Law School and certainly this website this to stay up to date with our activities.
Good luck and see you around!
