LSS Social Justice Portfolio 2008
Hello, welcome, thanks for dropping by! We’re your social justice reps, Sanmati and Em. 2008 is the year of social justice. The Victorian Charter of Rights is in force, the campaign for a Federal Bill of Rights is underway, and suddenly human rights seem to have some popular purchase. Our ‘vision’ as social justice representatives is to get the student body (including ourselves!) thinking as broadly and dextrously as possible about how to use our training and privilege as law students in socially just ways. This agenda depends upon the people with the ideas (you!) getting involved, coming along to some events, throwing us ideas and keeping us posted with what you’re doing. Are you involved with something that the rest of the student body should know about? Drop us a line, we’d love to hear from you! Also, keep popping by the site to see what’s currently happening—maybe there’s something there that will interest you…
CURRENT PROJECTS: Social Justice Links! This database contains a series of links & leads that direct you to alternative legal careers, community legal sector information, volunteering opportunities, important activist sites and openings with local and overseas NGOs and development agencies. Involved in a project? Know of someone doing something interesting in the social justice sphere? Drop us a line on lss-socialjustice@unimelb.edu.au.

It’s basically an external placement that forms the basis of assessment at uni. Students undertaking an externship may possibly be entitled to a stipend covering the period of their placement. At this stage, we are seeking expressions of interest from either students interested in undertaking an externship, or from organisations interested in hosting and supervising students. Contact us if you fit either of these descriptions! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Upcoming events— Thursday 8th May, 1pm-2pm (Law School, room tbc) Gorkem Acaroglu, director of the play Haneef—The Interrogation, will speak at lawschool about the targets and aims of the play, and what attracts her to dramatise anti-terror investigations (her last play, The Habib Show, examined the case of Guantanamo detainee Mamdouh Habib).
