1.1 PURELY DICTA V(1) 2008

Dear Students,
We realise you are all immersed in the frantic limbo of the pre-exam period, but we know there are some of you out there who:

  • Crave self-expression and escape
  • Would like to rediscover that creative streak you hazily remember from your pre-Law School life
  • Feel a sudden panicky need to contribute to Uni, Get Involved etc, but feel wary of committing to anything too demanding of your time

Or even just...

  • Need a new form of procrastination

Well, we are here to help.

Who are we?
Purely Dicta is a biannual magazine designed, produced and published by students within the Law School. The process is overseen by two Editors, with the support of the Law Students' Society (of which we are also a part).

What is our plan for PD in 2008?
Our aim for Purely Dicta this year is to give you something different, creative, and above all, representative of the diverse facets of the Law School community.

Help us depart from the cliche that Law School kids are a bunch of socially-barren, exclusive, bookish lepers without a creative bone in their bodies.

In any case, PD is about self-expression. We want your contribution, whatever form you select (opinion piece, investigative piece, creative writing, poetry, prose, photography, drawing etc). Some of you may prefer guidance in terms of topics. We can discuss with you some ideas we are interested in exploring if you fit in this category.

Our timeline for the release of v(1) is as follows:

Key dates v(1) 2008
Friday 23 May: Let us know via email of your interest in contributing.
Friday 18 July: FINAL SUBMISSIONS DUE

For those of you with commitments over the winter break, but still interested in contributing, we will be releasing a second edition of PD in November 2008 (with deadline for submissions around mid-October). We'd love to hear your ideas for this edition if you are not in a position to submit to v(1).

We look forward to hearing from you.

Phil & Lil

1.5. Academic/Law School complaints/feedback

If you have any concerns or complaints about anything in the Law School, feel free to let me know. With regards to any concerns that are procedural, academic or otherwise, if for any reason you feel unable or uncomfortable to raise the matter through faculty, please do not hesitate to email me about it at this address. The LSS is the representative body for students on many committees throughout the Law School, and the more student feedback that we can provide to those meetings, the better.

2.1 An invitation to a FREE public lecture on International Humanitarian Law -

Australian Red Cross wishes to let you know about a free public seminar on International Humanitarian Law entitledAccountability for War Crimes: Issues of Command Responsibility in International Tribunals with Mr Peter Morrissey and Ms Elli Lewis.

If you would be able to distribute this invitation to any email or distribution lists that you may think are relevant, we would be very grateful.

The seminar will explore the issue of command responsibility through a series of international criminal cases before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY): Halilovic and Boškoski & Tarculovski. Mr Morrissey will trace the history of the Halilovic prosecution, from indictment to appeal, providing a case study for those interested in the prosecution of senior military figures and the broader story of the Bosnian war. Ms Lewis will focus on the case of Boškoski & Tarculovski and issues including the powers of the command structure; the role of the police force in a time of war; the powers of the Minister of Interior to investigate and punish his subordinates; and whether the measures taken were reasonable in the circumstances.

Mr Morrissey was Lead Counsel for the defence in the Halilovi´c proceedings in the ICTY. He is a Melbourne barrister specialising in criminal defence work at home and abroad. Peter has been at the Bar since 1994. Ms Lewis worked as a solicitor in the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICTY from July 2006 to January 2008, during which time she was assigned to the Mrkši´c and Boškoski trials.

Time: 6.30 – 8pm Wednesday 28 May 2008

Venue: Mallesons Stephen Jaques: Level 50, Bourke Place, 600 Bourke St Melbourne.

RSVP – Bookings are required for this event. Please RSVP to Agata Wierzbowski via email at awierzbowski@redcross.org.au or call 03 8327 7737.
