LSS Newsletter - Week 1 (2008)

Hello and welcome back for 2008!

This year each week or so I will send you an email outlining the many opportunities and events around the law school. This year will be bigger and better than ever before for the LSS and we hope that you chose to get involved many of the diverse fields the activity of the LSS covers. This email will not be confined though to the work of the LSS committee, it will also include opportunities relating to the Melbourne University Law Review and the Melbourne Journal of International Law, as well as from the Postgraduate Law Students’ Association and the many research centres and interest groups around the law school.

So, whilst trying to cover the enormous array of events taking place and opportunities being presented throughout the Law School, I will also try to keep these emails brief and readable!  Wish me luck!

Please feel free to email me to let me know what else you would like to be included in this email, if you would like an event of your own included or how you would like it to be improved.

Welcome back again, and I hope to see you around the Law School soon!!

Environment Portfolio

Hello everyone, I'm Hui Chi, the Environment Officer. If you're interested in environment issues, discovering ways of using your legal studies to help improve the welfare of our green surroundings, or
would simply like to meet like-minded souls from the law school, then join the environment law collective!

This collective is completely open to anyone from the law school and is meant to be a relaxed, open space where people can exchange ideas about how to improve the environment. There will also be practical activities, such as going on conservation trips with Conservation Volunteers Australia and the Mountaineering Club of Melbourne University.

There will be plenty of opportunities to meet other environmentally-oriented folks from around the university.

Other initiatives include having forums on environment law and arranging placements at various environment organisations.

The first collective meeting will be on 12th March, Wednesday, at 1 pm. Please meet at the ground floor of the law school, where the benches are (in front of the security office). Food will be provided- if the weather's fine we'll make a picnic out of it!

Until then, to receive news on environment law matters, and green events around the University campus and beyond, please email me at: lss-environment@unimelb.edu.au

Womens’ Portfolio

International Women’s Day
Speaker: Alexandra Richards QC, 10 March, 1 - 2pm, Lecture Theatre 0109

International Women’s Day aims to celebrate the achievements of women, while also recognising that obstacles in equality continue to exist.  To celebrate International Women’s Day, and as a joint initiative between the Melbourne Law School, the MU LSS Women’s Portfolio and the Women Barristers’ Association, the Melbourne Law School will welcome Alexandra Richards QC to speak on her experiences as a legal professional and current issues facing women’s access to justice.
As a founder and President of Australian Women Lawyers from 1997 until 2000, Ms Richards has navigated the obstacles facing women in the law.  Through a dedication to human rights advocacy, international experience as a consultant to the Office of Prosecutions, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UN) based in Arusha, Tanzania, various committee positions and as a University of Melbourne alumni, Ms Richards’ commitment to equality before the law certainly mirror the goals of International Women’s Day.  For professional insights relevant to all women law students, and the opportunity to engage in conversation, this is an opportunity not to be missed!
