OVERVIEW OF THE WOMEN AND THE LAW BREAKFAST

The Women and the Law Breakfast is sponsored by Maurice Blackburn. It allows law students and members of the legal profession to listen to three inspirational women at various stages of their careers. Held in the third week of May each year, the Breakfast promotes the achievements of women in the legal community, while also providing networking opportunities between law students and the legal profession.

Despite the use of the word Women in the name of the organisation, men are warmly welcomed to register as mentors and to attend the Breakfast, where it is great to see their increasing numbers each year!

Each year there is also a raffle at the Breakfast. All monies raised from the raffle go to one of the speaker's charities. So please bring along your $5 notes for a most worthwhile cause.

2.4 An invitation to a FREE public lecture on International Humanitarian Law -

Australian Red Cross wishes to let you know about a free public seminar on International Humanitarian Law entitledAccountability for War Crimes: Issues of Command Responsibility in International Tribunals with Mr Peter Morrissey and Ms Elli Lewis.

If you would be able to distribute this invitation to any email or distribution lists that you may think are relevant, we would be very grateful.

The seminar will explore the issue of command responsibility through a series of international criminal cases before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY): Halilovic and Boškoski & Tarculovski. Mr Morrissey will trace the history of the Halilovic prosecution, from indictment to appeal, providing a case study for those interested in the prosecution of senior military figures and the broader story of the Bosnian war. Ms Lewis will focus on the case of Boškoski & Tarculovski and issues including the powers of the command structure; the role of the police force in a time of war; the powers of the Minister of Interior to investigate and punish his subordinates; and whether the measures taken were reasonable in the circumstances.

Mr Morrissey was Lead Counsel for the defence in the Halilovi´c proceedings in the ICTY. He is a Melbourne barrister specialising in criminal defence work at home and abroad. Peter has been at the Bar since 1994. Ms Lewis worked as a solicitor in the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICTY from July 2006 to January 2008, during which time she was assigned to the Mrkši´c and Boškoski trials.
