LSS Newsletter - Week 2 (2008)

Hello,

Thankyou to everybody who came along to the LSS BBQ last week. Getting through 600 sausages, 120 vege burgers/sausages, many slabs and drinks showed that a huge amount of law students came along and added to the atmosphere on a great day. Thanks also to Prof Hathaway, the new Dean of the Law School who kindly joined us at the BBQ.

There is a huge amount going on in and around the LSS and the Law School at the moment. This email is pretty long, but I’d highly recommend you at least scan all the way through it as there is such a diverse range of magnificent opportunities available to Melbourne Law students.

Particularly, I’d like to bring your attention to 1. The fact that nominations are open for 4 more days for JD reps and Final Year reps to the LSS, 2. The many functions taking place in the Careers Portfolio, including the Practical Skills Seminars, starting today, and 3. The opening of registration for all LSS competitions for 2008.

Please let me know how you would like this newsletter improved and if there’s anything else you would like included in it.

Enjoy week 2!

1.3. Competitions
Welcome back to a brand new year and a fresh opportunity to claim glory and bragging rights in LSS competitions!

Applications for competitions have now officially opened and all law students are eligible to enter. To apply, simply fill out a form available from the stand near the LSS office or online at www.mulss.com. All the major competitions, like mooting and witness examination require teams of two so grab a buddy and sign up before applications close on the 25th of March 2008.

"Err...what is a 'mooting'?"
Unsure what mooting and witness examination are? The LSS will be running demonstrations of our two most popular and respected competitions in room G29 during the lunch break on the following dates:

Witness Examination: Wednesday, 12 March at 1pm in G29
Mooting: Thursday, 13 March at 1pm in G29

The demonstrations will be conducted by finalists of last year's competitions, so it's a great chance to see for yourself what the competitions entail while witnessing the very best in action. There will be an opportunity to ask questions afterwards, so come along to find out all you need to know about LSS competitions.

More details about the competitions will be available on the LSS website and in the 2008 Competition Guidebook which will be released in the coming weeks at its very own launch party. We hope to see you then!

1.4. International Women's Day
 (10th March, Lecture Theatre 0109)

International Women’s Day aims to celebrate the achievements of women, while also recognising that obstacles in equality continue to exist.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, and as a joint initiative between the Melbourne Law School, the MU LSS Women’s Portfolio and the Women Barristers’ Association, the Melbourne Law School will welcome Alexandra Richards QC to speak on her experiences as a legal professional and current issues facing women’s access to justice.

As a founder and President of Australian Women Lawyers from 1997 until 2000, Ms Richards has navigated the obstacles facing women in the law.

Through a dedication to human rights advocacy, international experience as a consultant to the Office of Prosecutions, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UN) based in Arusha, Tanzania, various committee positions and as a University of Melbourne alumni, Ms Richards’ commitment to equality before the law certainly mirror the goals of International Women’s Day.

For professional insights relevant to all women law students, and the opportunity to engage in conversation, this is an opportunity not to be missed!

2.4. The University of Melbourne Human Rights Forum Lunchtime Lecture: Torture doesn't happen in Australia, does it?  Views from the United Nations Committee against Torture
The University of Melbourne Human Rights Forum Lunchtime Lecture Series for 2008 will begin on Wednesday 12 March. Ben Schokman from the Human Rights Law Resource Centre will discuss his recent experience appearing before the UN Committee Against Torture in Geneva.

Date:  Wednesday 12 March, 1-2pm
Location:  Room 316, Alice Hoy Building, University of Melbourne

In May this year, the UN Committee against Torture will consider how the Australian Government is complying with its obligations under the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.  Last year, lawyers from the Human Rights Law Resource Centre travelled to Geneva to provide written and oral submissions to the Committee.  The issues raised before the Committee included serious concerns in relation to Australia's counter terrorism laws, the mandatory detention of asylum seekers, the state of Australia's prisons and particular issues affecting Indigenous Australians. Ben Schokman from the Human Rights Law Resource Centre will be speaking about how issues of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment relate to law, policy and practice in Australia, as well as stories from Geneva and his experience before the UN Committee against Torture

Ben is a lawyer with the Human Rights Law Resource Centre based in Melbourne. The Human Rights Law Resource Centre is Australia's first specialist human rights legal service and aims to promote and protect human rights through the practice of law. Ben's work at the HRLRC includes undertaking and supporting the provision of legal services, litigation, education, training, research, policy analysis and advocacy regarding human rights.  Ben previously worked as a commercial litigator with Allens Arthur Robinson and has experience with a range of national and international NGOs.  He recently undertook studies in Geneva with the International Service for Human Rights on how domestic NGOs can engage with international human rights mechanisms.

3.1. Kirby Cup 08 - Law Reform Competition
The Kirby Cup Law Reform Competition is a unique opportunity for Australian law students to gain recognition for their vision for law reform. The Kirby Cup is organised and sponsored by the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC), in collaboration with the Australian Law Students Association (ALSA).

To enter, teams of two students must provide a submission (maximum 15 pages) on a topic of law reform relevant to a current ALRC inquiry. The topic is set by the ALRC.

Based on written entries, up to three teams will be invited to participate in an oral advocacy round to be held in Hobart in July, during the Australian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) Conference. The teams advancing to the oral advocacy round will present their proposal to an expert judging panel convened by an ALRC Commissioner.

The winners will have their names engraved on the perpetual Kirby Cup, which was donated by the Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG. In addition, a summary of the winning entry will be published in the ALRC’s journal Reform. The entries of the teams advancing to the oral advocacy round also will be treated as submissions to the relevant inquiry and will be formally recognised in the relevant ALRC consultation papers and final report.

Teams wishing to participate must register for the competition by 11 April 2008. Entries must then be submitted by 5 May 2008. The oral advocacy component will be in Hobart during the ALSA conference, being held in the week commencing 7 July 2008. More details will be posted on the Kirby Cup web site as they are finalised.

Detailed information on the competition is available from the Kirby Cup web site. This web site will be regularly updated as competition details are finalised, so interested students should check it regularly.
