1.1 Beyond Collins Street Seminar Series

The annual 'Beyond Collins Street' seminar series kicks off in the week following the Easter break. A diverse range of distinguished speakers with legal backgrounds will share their experiences of the legal world 'Beyond Collins Street'. Valuable insights into legal careers in the government, environmental, community and international sectors may help you make those all too difficult decisions of what to do when you have to move on to 'beyond Pelham street'.  Lastly, the seminar series will be concluded with a cocktail party at which the Hon. Justice Marcia Neave and her associate, Mr. Toby Pullock will share with us what a career at the judiciary entails. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity to mingle with speakers over some nibblies and drinks. All are encouraged and warmly welcomed to attend. Speakers include Melissa Bray from DFAT; Shanta Martin from OXFAM; Phoebe Knowles (alumni)  - who's currently on a secondment to PILCH and has experience with the Special Court in Sierra Leone; panel of speakers from Federation of CLC; John Cain (Victorian Government Solicitor) and more!

1.5. Academic/Law School complaints/feedback

If you have any concerns or complaints about anything in the Law School, feel free to let me know. With regards to any concerns that are procedural, academic or otherwise, if for any reason you feel unable or uncomfortable to raise the matter through faculty, please do not hesitate to email me about it at this address. The LSS is the representative body for students on many committees throughout the Law School, and the more student feedback that we can provide to those meetings, the better.

1.7. Women’s Mentoring Program

The Striving for Success: Women’s Mentoring Program is designed to create networks between University of Melbourne law students and women in the legal profession.

The program is flexible and it is dependent on the mentor and mentee to arrange details such as when and where to meet. Past examples of the program have included meeting for coffees and lunches, work experience, “shadowing” a lawyer in court and creating connections through general
communication via email or the telephone.

Places are limited. In 2007, due to high demand for mentors, not all law students were awarded a place in the program and precedence was given to later year law students.
To be considered for selection, please complete this form and hand it in at the LSS Office on Level 2.
For more information on the program, please email: lss-womens@unimelb.edu.au .

2.1. Kirby Cup 08 - Law Reform Competition
The Kirby Cup Law Reform Competition is a unique opportunity for Australian law students to gain recognition for their vision for law reform. The Kirby Cup is organised and sponsored by the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC), in collaboration with the Australian Law Students Association (ALSA).

To enter, teams of two students must provide a submission (maximum 15 pages) on a topic of law reform relevant to a current ALRC inquiry. The topic is set by the ALRC.

Based on written entries, up to three teams will be invited to participate in an oral advocacy round to be held in Hobart in July, during the Australian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) Conference. The teams advancing to the oral advocacy round will present their proposal to an expert judging panel convened by an ALRC Commissioner.

The winners will have their names engraved on the perpetual Kirby Cup, which was donated by the Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG. In addition, a summary of the winning entry will be published in the ALRC’s journal Reform. The entries of the teams advancing to the oral advocacy round also will be treated as submissions to the relevant inquiry and will be formally recognised in the relevant ALRC consultation papers and final report.

Teams wishing to participate must register for the competition by 11 April 2008. Entries must then be submitted by 5 May 2008. The oral advocacy component will be in Hobart during the ALSA conference, being held in the week commencing 7 July 2008. More details will be posted on the Kirby Cup web site as they are finalised.

Detailed information on the competition is available from the Kirby Cup web site. This web site will be regularly updated as competition details are finalised, so interested students should check it regularly.
