The Summit is scheduled to take place from the 3 rd- 5th February, 2012. The Theme for the Summit, 2012, is International Trade Law and Economic Policy.
Government Law College enjoys the distinction of being the oldest law school in Asia and has, since its inception in 1855, essayed a seminal role in the evolution of the legal and judicial landscape of India. Generations of legal luminaries, nurtured at Government Law College, have made remarkable contributions to the evolution of Indian jurisprudence.
Taking cognizance of the immense relevance of growing transnational interactions, SPIL has undertaken the task of promoting international law and facilitating an empirical study, which rises beyond the realm of mere textual knowledge. The Government Law College International Law Summit is a result of this constant endeavour.
The Summit comprises, aside from the key note addresses, lectures, workshops and call for papers, two novel competitions which were conceived within the portals of our hallowed institution, Government Law College. Our association with premier institutions such as the International Law Student Association, Chicago and the Indian Society of International Law, New Delhi have only added to our credentials, and have ensured interest and participation from reputed law schools across the world.
Having said that, the success the Summit has enjoyed must also be attributed to organizations from across the corporate and legal spectrum who have been associated with the Summit, such as the Tata Group, Mulla & Mulla and Craigie, Blunt & Caroe, Udwadia & Udeshi, AZB & Partners, to name a few. In the previous edition of the Summit, we have received the support of our Knowledge Partners, Westlaw and our Magazine Partners, Lex Witness. The Summit has been graced by the august presence of experts in various fields of International Law, who have participated in the Summit in varied capacities, ranging from delivering Key Note Addresses to lectures to judging the competitions.
The Invitation to the Summit, comprising the competition Modules and other relevant details, will be unveiled in the first week of August, 2011. We look forward to your participation and support in this venture.
Treaty Appreciation Competition
The Treaty Appreciation competition has been modelled on the procedures of various bodies in the international sphere entrusted with the task of evaluating and appraising the legality, consistency and rationality of treaties, codifications or other legislative documents. In keeping with last year’s theme, it was the International Law Commission. The body chosen for this edition of the Summit will be revealed when the competition Module is released. Participants are expected to launch an examination of the Competition Module presented to them, which will comprise legislation relevant to the theme of the Summit, critique specific articles therein and recommend the alteration, deletion or addition of articles.
International Judgment Deliberation
This competition brings a fresh approach to problem analysis and judgment making. The competition Module will comprise a case file of a wide connotation, such that it will invite varied interpretations that not only attract established legal principles, but also encourage thought innovation that is based on legal analysis and rational thinking. Participants are encouraged to arrive at, after analysis of the facts of the case and arguments presented, a judgment that is infallible in law and innovative in thought.
Call for Papers
The Summit will deal with papers within the realm of International Arbitration and Taxation. All further details regarding the aforementioned will be declared in the Invite upon its release. We look forward to contributions from the across the spectrum of the student community and the legal fraternity.
