Aguirre, the Wrath of God is Werner Herzog's classic 1972 film. In the 16th century, after the Spanish conquest of the Incan empire, Aguirre leads a group of conquistadores down the Amazon River in search of the legendary city of gold, El Dorado. There are many remarkable things about the film: its astonishing opening credits, its defining closing scene (the greatest visual statement ever made about empire) and the madness of both its protagonist and the actor playing him (the incomparably crazy Klaus Kinski). It makes Apocalypse Now look ersatz.
Aguirre has appeared on Time Magazine’s list of ‘All Time 100 Best Films’.
