INTERNATIONAL RESPONSES TO DEMOCRATISATION IN THE ARAB WORLD

PANEL DISCUSSION

 

Australians have closely followed recent moves toward democratisation in North Africa and the Middle East. These events have once again tested the international community’s capacity to balance national sovereignty with the preservation of human rights, and in particular its responsibility to protect populations from grave violations of these rights. Join us as a panel of experts explores the consequences of regime change in Tunisia and Egypt, and uprising in Libya and Bahrain, for international relations.

 

Panel Members include:

 

· Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AO QCProfessorial Fellow at The University of Melbourne since July 2009, and President Emeritus of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group, the independent global conflict prevention and resolution organisation which he led from 2000 to 2009.

 

· Professor Hilary Charlesworth AM: Professor of International Law and Human Rights at the Australian National University and Director of the Centre for International Governance and Justice in the Regulatory Institutions Network. 

 

· Mr Daniel Flitton: Diplomatic editor of the Age Newspaper.  An international relations specialist, former intelligence analyst for the Australian government and university lecturer.

 

· Dr Sally Totman: Convenor of Middle East Studies at Deakin University, and specialist in Middle East politics and US foreign policy towards the Middle East.

 

· Dr Timothy LynchLecturer in the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Melbourne, and specialist in US Politics and Foreign Policy.

 

· Professor Robyn Eckersley (Moderator): Convenor of the Master of International Relations program at the University of Melbourne.
