Melbourne Law School graduate Professor Philip Alston is recognised as one of the world’s leading scholars and advocates of international human rights law. He has taught at the Australian National University, Harvard University, the European University Institute and New York University.  He has edited over 30 books, written 150 articles and was editor in chief of the prestigious European Journal of International Law from 1996-2007.

His expertise has been recognised with his appointment to various international positions including Chairperson of the Committee on Economic Social and Cultural Rights from 1991– 1998, Special Adviser to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the Millennium Development Goals, and he is currently Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council on extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions. He has also worked as a consultant for a range of international agencies such as the ILO, UNICEF, UNESCO, UNDP and the OECD.
