Changes in 2012
The LSS will be undergoing some fairly significant changes throughout 2012. You will notice many of these changes quickly (we are building a new logo and website - ready to serve in April), but others will take a little longer to filter through.
As an organisation, we will increase our own transparency and standards in a number of ways. We are implementing a code of conduct by which all of our committee members will draft and adhere to, based on various values we deemed important. We are always happy to provide reasons why we have spent money on a certain initiative, or why we have sourced it from a certain organisation. We are drafting a new constitution, aimed at simplifying the way we conduct our business and making it easier for new committee members and students generally to understand our processes.

New year's resolutions aside - these holidays definitely did not seem long enough, particularly for those of us who failed to receive a time-turner from Santa. I think he muttered 'GFC hangover' or something like that when he dropped off my riveting copy of 'March of the Patriots'. That's how we party.
But never fear dear friends - the LSS will welcome back your sun-soaked bones with open arms in 2012. There is much to look forward to, including the expansion of our Student Tutorial Service and Book Fairy initiatives to ensure that your marks are higher and you don't have to revert to busking for all your textbooks. But if you can actually busk, then I'm guessing it's probably a great way to pay for your textbooks, so don't listen to me.

[ Read more… ]ANU National Parliamentary-Congressional Internship Program Applications Due Friday
The National Parliamentary-Congressional Internship Program at the Australian National University (ANU) is offering an exciting opportunity for three outstanding students from Australia’s Group of Eight (Go8) universities to travel to Washington DC to intern for a United States senator on the influential U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
For a period of up to three months, between December 2011 and February 2012, the interns will assist the Senator’s senior staff develop policy advice and assist with the day-to-day functioning of the office. They will have opportunities to attend foreign relations committee hearings, as well as policy briefings held for staff in the U.S. Capitol Building.

The Annual Sir Anthony Mason Lecture 2011
On behalf of the Melbourne University Law Students' Society, it is our pleasure to invite you to the 2011 Sir Anthony Mason Lecture.
The Lecture was inaugurated in 1995, the year of Sir Anthony Mason's retirement as Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. It serves to celebrate his outstanding contribution to the legal profession and the common law of Australia, as well as offering the opportunity for students to meet and listen to those who have helped to shape the law as we study it. It is one of the most significant events of the MULSS calendar and in particular for the Education Portfolio.
Electives for JD Students
1. The closing date/time for JD students applications (via JESS) from Thursday 6 October until Wednesday 12 October at 2pm, to enable students to respond to clerkship offers. As such, the email advice regarding application outcomes may now be pushed back to Monday 17 October, but it is still hoped that students will know by the original date of Friday 14 October.

Students are invited to an evening of lively debate and discussion to mark a decade of global political, legal and social change since September 11, 2001. Participate in a roundtable conversation to consider issues such as:

- Should we still be in Afghanistan?
- Is terrorism still the central security issue for the international community?

E-qual Magazine is an annual LSS publication that highlights volunteering and public law experiences, opportunities and issues.
Suggested word limit is between 300 - 1000 words long, pictures are welcome! To express your interest in submitting an article, email lss-equality@unimelb.edu.au. Submissions are due by Monday 19th September.
Submissions will be assessed by the Law School Gender Liaison Officer, Ann Genovese and the winning author will receive $150 worth of vouchers to Seven Seeds.

Mindfulness Seminars
The Melbourne Law School in collaboration with the University of Melbourne Counselling Service offers a program of mindfulness workshops specifically for JD and LLB students during Semester 2, 2011.
Mindfulness is form of self-awareness adapted from the Buddhist tradition of meditation. Considerable research has found mindfulness to have significant health benefits and to be helpful in the management of stress, the ability to focus on study and the promotion of coping and wellbeing.
Curious? An introductory session will be held to offer an overview and short practice.
